John Calvin Portman was an American architect known for popularizing hotels.

He is responsible for the redevelopment of several city blocks in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, United States, and is credited with coining the term “urban redevelopment”.

Portman’s signature style features the use of large, open atriums and multi-story public spaces.

Portman suspension lamp was created by Porus Studio designers with the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in mind.

The Marriott’s atrium spans the entire height of the building and consists of two vertical chambers divided by elevator shafts and bridges.
